THE RATHLIN LIGHTHOUSE CHALLENGE 2026
On Saturday 4th July 2026 (11:15am), you can test your endurance and experience breath-taking coastal views on Northern Ireland’s most scenic and storied island — Rathlin.
The Rathlin Lighthouse Challenge is not just a 16 mile foot-race; it’s a journey through time, rugged beauty, and maritime heritage. Join fellow runners as you negotiate the stunning route that links the island’s three legendary lighthouses, each with its own tale to tell.
Start
Your challenge begins in the heart of Rathlin Island, in Church Bay. You'll make your way along the peaceful roads (and some trails) to the island's 3 famous lighthouse, in the following order:
Rathlin West Lighthouse (RSPB Seabird Centre)
Unlike any other, this inverted lighthouse built into a cliff face is a marvel of engineering. Constructed around 1912, its lantern sits at the base of the tower, not the top — designed to cut through the mist and fog that often hangs low around the island. Now fully automated, it remains one of the most unique lighthouses in the British Isles.
Rathlin East Lighthouse
Dating back to 1856, this lighthouse was designed by the famed Irish engineer George Halpin. It marks the eastern entrance to Rathlin Sound and was crucial in guiding vessels into the busy shipping lanes of the North Channel. With its attached keeper’s house and spectacular cliffside perch, it offers incredible views back toward the mainland.
Rathlin - Rue Point Lighthouse
Established in 1921 (replacing a 'temporary light' erected in 1915), Rue Point Lighthouse is the most modern of the three. With its six-sides and iconic black-and-white bands, it stands guard over Rathlin’s southernmost tip, warning sailors of the rocky shoreline. The surrounding area is a haven for seabirds and often seals bask nearby on the rocks.
Finish
Your challenge will end back in the heart of the island, Church Bay. Here, you can recover with a dip in the sea before making your way to one of the welcoming local establishments for some celebratory food and drinks... and of course, tell your own tales about your Rathlin Island adventure!
The inaugural RATHLIN LIGHTHOUSE CHALLENGE will take place on Saturday 4th July 2026 (11:15am). The race will start and finish in Church Bay, approximately 400m from the Harbour.

You can manage your own registration and transfer the entry via the 'My Registration' link which is included on your confirmation email. In the unlikely event that any of the above should occur, the Rathlin Run Team will do our upmost to provide an alternative value for money solution. This is more than likely to be a VIRTUAL run.

Due to the unique nature of the event, were people must leave after the race to get ferries, it has proved logistically impossible to organise a prize-giving that suits everyone.
Therefore, the top three male and female finishers across the line will receive their prizes when they cross the line. All other prizes will be posted to the winners within 7 days of the event.
Please visit the RATHLIN FERRY website HERE for the latest timetable information.
The Rathlin Ferry Summer Timetable will be published and in April / March 2026, at which point you can book your ferry to / from the Rathlin Lighthouse Challenge.
