FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can you register on the day?

No - only online entries are accepted.  Entries will be limited to 240, a combined number across both events, and considering the event has reached capacity previously, we would encourage everyone to enter early.

Do I need to sign in on the day?

Yes - although you have entered online, you MUST still proceed to the registration area on the morning of the race (Race HQ @ McCuigs Bar) to collect your race number and goody bag.  Due to the timing of the last ferry prior to race start, we encourage all participants to 'sign in' as soon as possible when they arrive on the island.

Is there a minimum age to race?

Yes - for the 10 Mile event you must be 18 years old or over and for the 5k event you must be 11 years old or over

Is there a cut off time?

No (for both events), but please remember that this is an officially permitted running event and as such, participants MUST not enter with the intention of walking the entire distance.  If it is obvious that this is your intention, you may be asked to withdraw from the event on health and safety grounds (as we cannot keep emergency services on stand-by to facilitate this).

Where can I leave my belongings while I run?

There will be a specified bag drop area near the finish line.  Please note that this area is not resourced at all times and belongings are left at your own risk.  The Rathlin Run take no responsibility for theft or damage to any belongings.

Are there water stations on the course?

Yes - Official water stations are located at 2.7 miles, 5.7 miles and 8.1 miles on the 10 mile course and at 1k and 4k on the 5k course.  There will also be water on the finish line for each competitor.

Do you record my time? Where do I get my result?

Times will be recorded and results produced for the event.  As the timing is manual, it is ESSENTIAL that you wear your race number on the front of your t-shirt/vest/jacket and it MUST be visible at all times.

Results will be published as soon as practicable after the race.  This is usually before 7pm on race day via www.rathlinrun.com.

Are there mile/kilometre markers on the course?

Yes - there are mile markers on the 10 mile route and km markers on the 5k route.

Can I run with music?

No - we understand that some runners like to train with headphones, but we will STRICTLY enforce UKA rules on wearing headphones during the race; this is for YOUR own and others safety.

Can I run with my dog?

As much as we love animals, unfortunately dogs (or any other animals) are NOT allowed on the course as part of our race.  This is against UKA rules.

I have entered the race but can no longer run, can I get a refund?

No - unfortunately we cannot offer refunds.  As soon as you enter the event, we commit to purchasing items for you, and thus, as a not for profit event, we would have to pay for these items if we gave you a refund - as a not for profit event, this would be unsustainable.  This is clearly explained in the event terms and conditions HERE and on the race registration form.

Can I transfer my place to someone else?

This can only be allowed if it is transferred until Thursday 31st July 2025 (5pm) and using the official race transfer system operated by The Rathlin Run.  You can manage your own registration and transfer the entry via the 'My Registration' link which is included on your confirmation email.  Any transfers requests from 31/7/25 (5pm) will not be accepted as per terms and conditions of entry.  Anyone knowingly competing under someone else's name on the race day will be immediately disqualified. Please check your race pack at registration to ensure your details are correct.

What happens if the ferries are cancelled due to weather (or for any reason)?

Given the unique nature of the Rathlin Run and the essential ferry crossings, it is important to note the following BEFORE entering the race.

Entry fees are also non-refundable if the race has to be cancelled due to circumstances outside of our control; for instance, cancellation of ferries, or, due to a major incident, adverse/dangerous weather conditions or on Police/Emergency Services' advice.

In the unlikely event that any of the above should occur, the Rathlin Run Team will do our upmost to provide an alternative value for money solution.  This is more than likely to be a VIRTUAL run.

Entries will NOT be deferred to 2026.

The only ferry I could get is the 12pm from Ballycastle to Rathlin Island. Will I make it on time?

If you are on the 12pm ferry from Ballycastle (which arrives at 12:40pm), please quickly make your way to Race HQ / Registration - you will have time to get to the start line for the 1pm start (and 1:10pm start for 5k).

We will accommodate those coming off this ferry, however, we will NOT hold the race start back for those who opt to casually make their way across to Race HQ / Registration whilst chatting to everyone they pass - there will be plenty of time to catch up with your friends and running buddies after the race!

Do you support any charities?

On your race entry form you will be asked about donations to Belfast Activity Centre (BAC).  100% of this donation will go to BAC.  For further information on BAC please visit www.belfastactivitycentre.com.

I have entered the race but have not received a confirmation email?

Firstly, please check your spam folder.  If you still can't find it.  Please email runrathlin@gmail.com to ensure your entry has been recorded on our system.

What if I have won a prize at the event but cannot stay until the prize giving?

Due to the unique nature of the event, were people must leave after the race to get ferries, it has proved logistically impossible to organise a prize-giving that suits everyone.

Therefore, from 2024, the top three finishers across the line in the 10 mile and 5k races will receive their prizes when they cross the line. All other prizes will be posted to the winners within 7 days of the event.

What are the ferry times?

Please visit the RATHLIN FERRY website HERE for the latest timetable information.
